Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota is a state-wide resource development and support organization that serves, advocates for, and advances the work of Minnesota's Habitat for Humanity affiliates to build simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need. Habitat for Humanity continues to be supported under the leadership of Shirley Kerkow. There were thirteen volunteers on the construction team this year representing Zion.
Missions Report 2010
Zion members continue to be generous contributors to our missions’ efforts. A complete list of Zion benevolence is included in the attached financial report.
The Fair Trade Project, coordinated by Pat Freeman, continues to thrive. In 2010 we followed the example of hundreds of congregations and now serve exclusively Fair Trade coffee. Thanks to all of our loyal chocolate lovers and coffee/tea drinkers who have made this Project a continued mission of the church. Over $1,000 has been given to Lutheran World Relief to date.
The Lindstrom food shelf has been another well-supported mission of Zion this year. The food shelf services over 40 families per week, and continues to have tremendous need for non-perishable food, cleaning supplies and personal toiletry items. During this very difficult economy there has been a significant increase in patronage of the food shelf, with some estimates as high as 30%.
In January, an adult mission team of Shirley and Gary Kerkow and Marilyn Rue joined together with Hosanna Lutheran in Forest Lake to participate in Mission Jamaica. This team participated in a variety of projects in an orphanage and pre-school setting, and shared their experiences with a program for the congregation. We thank them for their ministry to the people of Jamaica.

Lutheran World Relief kits are organized and sent by our mission team, led by Corrine Mix. A group of volunteers meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month and assemble school, health, clothing and friendship kits, as well as quilts. We have a dedicated crew of quilters who have assembled 50 quilts this year. They are: Betty McCleary, Frances Peterson, Vicella Carlson, Marilyn Rignell, Elsie Peters, Bonnie Laurents and Corrine Mix. Jan Olson, Virgi Johnson, Corrine Mix and Betty Lapinoja were involved in the sewing of bags for 75 school kits.
Many thanks are given to Marilyn Rignell, for her years of service in coordination of Meals on Wheels. We appreciate her efforts in this ministry. Ruth Nielsen has stepped forward to work on Meals on Wheels in 2011. Thank you both for your dedication to this important service ministry.
Zion continues to support the ministry of Pastor Arden and Janna Haug, serving as regional representatives, relating to companion churches in Europe, based in Slovakia.
Zion has a very active and spirited mission committee! We welcome new committee members, and encourage you to participate in any of the projects listed. If you have ideas for new opportunities for Missions, please come forward.
